Evening Primrose oil and vitamin B-complex.
Description
Each capsule contains Evening Primrose oil 1000 mg equivalent to γ- linolenic acid (GLA) 100 mg, folic acid 85 mcg, cyanocobalamin 1500 mcg, pyridoxine HCl 2.5 mcg equivalent to pyridoxine 2 mg.
Action
Pharmacology: Zifam Era DN is especially formulated to prevent diabetic neuropathy. Numerous scientific studies confirm the benefits of regular intake of similar combination like Zifam Era DN. Folic acid, cyanocobalamin and pyridoxine may also reduce the homocysteine levels in the bloodstream. Zifam Era DN may also thus reduce inflammatory response due to metabolic syndrome. Some studies show that taking γ-linolenic acid (GLA) for ≥6 months may reduce symptoms of nerve pain in people with diabetic neuropathy. People who have good blood sugar control may find GLA more effective than those with poor blood sugar control.
Pharmacokinetics: Gamma-linolenic acid-laden triglycerides in evening primrose oil are absorbed from the small intestine aided by bile salts. During this process, there is some deacylation of the fatty acids of the triglycerides. Reacylation takes place within the mucosal cells of the small intestine, and the GLA-laden triglycerides enter into the lymphatics in the form of chylomicrons. GLA-laden chylomicrons are transported from the lymphatics into the blood where GLA is carried in lipid particles to the various tissues of the body.
GLA is metabolized to the 20-carbon polyunsaturated fatty acid dihomo-γ-linolenic acid (DGLA), which is converted to PGE1. GLA and DGLA are normally not found as free fatty acids in cells. They occur mainly in cell membranes as components of phospholipids, neutral lipids and cholesterol esters. PGE1 is metabolized to smaller prostaglandin remnants, which are primarily polar dicarboxylic acids, most of which are excreted in the urine.
In addition to improving oxygenation by increasing PGE1 synthesis, Zifam Era DN may also improve nerve functioning.
Increased Nerve Excitability: GLA in Zifam Era DN enhances formation of phosphatidylinositol on account of its γ-linolenic acid content. This is vital for development of normal cell signaling mechanism.
Improved Nerve Conduction Velocity: This is achieved by increasing the Na+-K+-ATPase activity following enhanced levels of phosphatidylinositol.
Better Synaptic Conduction: By favorably influencing the ion channels function, GLA also facilitates synaptic conduction.
All these benefits also accrue indirectly as a result of GLA's ability to increase PGE1 and thereby improve endoneurial oxygenation. In addition to improving oxygenation by increasing PGE1 synthesis, GLA also improves nerve functioning.
Vitamins in Zifam Era DN are water-soluble and after saturating the tissues, all excess will be excreted unchanged in the urine.
